This fly has been a legend in Iceland and elsewhere fishing for salmon. Sometimes very effective but also is responsible for spooking pools. But how does it work.
The tube is very light as it is tied on a plastic tube and is mostly fished with floating line and stripped fast across the surface. The salmon will then chase the fly but not always grab it. A well known fishing method in Iceland is to fish the Sunray through pools and as soon as one sees the salmon chase the tube then replace it with smaller flies for effective fishing.
The length of the hair is very important, the longer the better. I looked for these long hairs all over the world and finally found very long soft goat hair.
There are two types of Sunray Shadow available, the original plastic tube version and also tied with a tungsten cone (as shown on the picture above to make it sink faster under the surface. Deadly for salmon.

Black Gnat is one of the most popular dry fly in the world. If you have black flies like midges or larger black flies in the insect fauna then use Black Gnat. To fish for trout in calm weather on a rice nothing beats dry fly fishing in Iceland.
